   Eric,
   I Use Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bombay white india ink. Another cool technique for reverse inking that I use is Pebeo drawing gum (liquid frisquet), this brand has been the best for me so far. You use it like regular ink and when it’s dry you can brush right over it with ink. After your ink is dry use your finger or I prefer a needed eraser and it comes right off leaving you with the white of the paper. I Hope that bit of info is useful to you and thanks for stopping by.

   I love these WIP pieces! They’re very helpful. I have a question about getting the artwork. I know you work with artists out of town/country. How does that work? Are you getting the original piece or do they send you a copy to print yourself? Which leads to, how do you print it? Do you print it on paper or actual comic pages? Just curious how often do you get to ink over original pencils? Sorry for all the questions, but as an aspiring inker myself, getting penciled pages seems to be the most difficult part. Thanks!

   Davis,

   First off thanks for stopping by. You have some good questions here so let me see if a can clear things up for you a bit.

   I am currently working over Tony Daniel on Batman and do to the significance of the title we are working directly over pencils. I’m also working on a title over Ken Lashley directly over pencils. So when i work over pencils they are usually sent to me from DC, in some cases directly from the penciler.

   The only book that I am currently inking over blue line is Marvl’s Demons of Mercy. Since Walter is in Brazil it makes more sense to work this way (saves time and money). Pretty much everything in my studio is over sized, I use an Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printer (i’ve had it for years and it’s still going strong) I can print up 13″x19″ and on comic boards with no problem. So when i work over blue line I ask the editor to send me a batch of boards and they’ll usually send me enough to cover however many issues i’m inking. I’ve created a template to drag my image on to in photoshop so the page lines up within the proper crop marks. One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to print in blue. I personally print out my page (300-600dpi) in grayscale because it’s easier on the eyes and looks better in the end, you can’t tell they’ve been inked over “gray line”. But you can work however you choose.

   Once i’m done inking I scan the inks prep the page the post to the clients FTP, just like magic.
