Something I inked just for fun today. I’m a fan of Philip Tans work and wanted to take a stab at inking him since he’s changed his style. There are a lot subtle things in how he renders and I love it. This was inked over a Hi Res print out. I mostly used my trusty Deleter Maru nibs along with a brush for the blacks. What a joy to ink and I was actually relaxed doing so…..imagine that.

Wow…it’s been a while! I’ve been a bit busy working on Cyborg and some personal art as well, but I’m back. Here is the latest ink commission over Ron Garney (inked over blue line). This was a welcomed break from the daily grind and after I finished it left me wanting to ink more, but I easily got over that and took a nap. Hahaha…

I’m working on another ink commission and this one is pretty batty…hint, hint.

So this is my new invention, i’ve had the idea of a pen type holder for my nibs for some time. I can’t say wether I was high or not, which may or may not have contributed to me even having the though that a Koh-I-Noor pen would be the perfect diameter for the Deleter nibs I use. Anyway the whole setup takes less than a minute (haha..) 

My next modification to this great invention will be to cut down the barrel end of the nib so that the nib has a little less length.

I’ve been pretty bogged down these days with work and our 3 month old daughter. Once I get caught up (if that ever happens) I’ll be able to blog a bit more as well as add more art to the site. In the mean time here’s the cover to Batman issue 674 colored by Guy Major.

Happy Halloween!!! I just got my comps today from Quebecor. I think everyone did an excellent job on the issue and Grant Morrison delivers on the story as usual. The resurrection of Ra’s Al Ghul on Halloween, what more can you ask for.

Since Tony has the finished pencils of this cover previewed on his blog I figured it’s my turn to show off the inks. This one needed to be turned around pretty quick, with that said I think it came out pretty nice. I don’t recall exactly how much time I spent on this one but I’m guessing around five hours or so. I actually worked on it late at night so I wouldn’t be to distracted by life.

Normally when I work I tend to start on the background or the stuff with the least amount of impact on the page. This way you can get warmed up before you tackle the faces and anything in the foreground. It’s a good idea to work this way especially if you are new to inking, it’ll help build your confidence. But working this way takes discipline so be patient. Most people tend to want to jump right into the heart of the page, trust me when I say warm up first. In my case I went right for Batman, I couldn’t resist.

Inking Tip: When you have a tight deadline on a page(s) after you feel you are nice and warmed up ink all the faces and hair first. I’ve found that this keeps me from rushing through the extremely crucial parts of the page. This way when you are closing in on the end of your night (you know the part where you’re just sick of inking) you aren’t stuck with all the tedious stuff. Now all you have left to do is crank up the music and breeze through all the easy stuff.
